Rainy day activities in DC with kids

DC is one of the easiest cities in the US for a rainy day with kids — the Smithsonians are all free, all indoor, and all kid-friendly. Here's the honest playbook. Updated 2026.

Smithsonians — free, indoor, huge

  • National Museum of Natural History — dinosaurs, Hope Diamond, Ocean Hall, Discovery Room (hands-on under-6). Easily 3-4 hours.
  • National Air and Space Museum — timed-entry reservation required. 2-3 hours for the full visit.
  • National Museum of American History — Spark!Lab (invention workshops), Star-Spangled Banner, First Ladies dresses.
  • National Portrait Gallery + American Art Museum — same building, quieter than Mall museums. Kid scavenger hunts at the desk.
  • African American History Museum — free, timed entry. Best for 10+.
  • Postal Museum (near Union Station) — surprisingly fun for little kids, often empty.
  • US Botanic Garden — not technically Smithsonian but adjacent. Indoor rainforest, kids' area.

Beyond the Smithsonians

  • National Building Museum — hands-on construction, kids' architecture lab. Timed admission ($10-15).
  • National Children's Museum (downtown) — paid admission, best for 2-10. Can be crowded.
  • International Spy Museum — paid, good for 8+. Interactive exhibits.
  • Planet Word (14th St) — language and words museum. Interactive, free.
  • Rock Creek Nature Center + Planetarium — free, indoor exhibits + sky shows.

Free library storytimes + programs

DCPL branches run daily storytimes (0–5), weekly STEM workshops, music programs, and teen events — all free. MLK Library downtown has the biggest schedule; Mt Pleasant, Petworth, and Southeast branches are reliable neighborhood options. Also check Arlington Public Library and Alexandria Library.

FAQ

Which Smithsonian is best when it's crowded and raining?

Portrait Gallery / American Art Museum. Same building, both free, usually much emptier than Natural History or Air and Space. Great for kids who need space to move without being jostled.

Can we Metro easily between Smithsonians on a rainy day?

Yes — most are within a 10-minute walk on the Mall. Smithsonian Metro (Blue/Orange/Silver) drops you between Natural History and American History. For the Zoo on a rainy day: skip it; the animals go inside and viewing's harder.

Any paid rainy-day options worth the money?

National Building Museum ($10-15) is excellent for hands-on little kids. National Children's Museum (~$18/kid) works for 2-10 but gets crowded. International Spy Museum ($30+) is best for 8+ with real interest.

What about kid-friendly indoor food halls?

Union Market (NE DC) has lots of options, kid-sized tables, usually has a weekend busker. The Wharf's Fish Market area is covered and interesting for kids. Both are indoor-ish and let you stretch out between museum visits.
